My Debut- World’s Greatest Commercials

IMG_5444.JPG

The day was Sunday…time was 5:45 PM. I was a total Nervous Nellie and probably should’ve only had one glass of wine at this point. My very first show as a television host is about to debut in 15 minutes. (caveat: I have done a lot of work…I was even on E! for a while co-hosting with two other dear friends in 2009) But this…..this was my first time on the air as a host, on a major network…by myself…on TV… carrying a show.  This was an epic moment for me. I’ve done some  things in my career that I’m really proud of but this one was really the pinnacle for me.

I have watched countdown shows and clip shows for what feels like forever. The Soup, AFV, Tosh, etc. I’ve always wanted one. As a kid I was in awe of Daisy Fuentes, Mary Hart, Tom Bergeron, Wendy Williams, Brooke Burke and others. I wanted their jobs. I now have it. This was a 1 Hour special counting down the World’s Greatest Commercials….and I WAS the host. FRIG YEAH!

I am as confidant as they come….I’m generally a cocky ass jerk about it. It’s probably my greatest defense mechanism but today was different. I was pacing, freaking out, totally terrified that people were not going to like it. Worried about my makeup, my delivery, was I funny?  Thankfully I was worried for nuttin’. The amount of love and support that came from close friends, new friends and even social media friends I have never met before blew my mind. I really, truly felt loved. People thought I was talented and expressed it. It feels really fantastic when people rally behind you as your cheerleaders when you’re in a moment of utter vulnerability.

Friends being supportive ROCK!

This business is so insane, it’s like a whole other world and it’s hard to comprehend unless you’re really in the trenches. (It’s Hollywood…I get it. It’s not a war zone. My job is a way easy cakewalk compared to a lot of the things I have seen people have to do to survive especially as I traveled over the past year.) but with that said….It is NOT an easy profession. It is not an easy road. Most people don’t stick it out.

So back to Hollywood…. people tell you NO on a constant basis. Rejection is basically your middle name. Karla Rejection Cavalli- that’s me…and GET THIS…..I have actually been lumped into the 1PERCENTER category of performers who have actually seen some success. AND I AM STILL TOLD NO OFTEN.

I’ve been hearing this for almost over 20 years. Can you imagine the amount of “NOs” I have heard? There were many. And I’m sure there will be many more.

But I never let it stop me.

And I think that’s what I’m the most proud of right now.  I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of my performances on World’s Greatest and the 14 upcoming episodes of Planet Primetime of course but….It’s about to be the height of my career so far… a few weeks before the debut of my very own travel television show, a few days after my first Countdown show aired and I can really say that I am most proud of being able to accept NO for an answer. And move the fuck on. If I couldn’t ….I wouldn’t be in this position right now.

CLICHE ALERT! Those “no” responses have only fueled me to pursue my dreams even harder. And I sure did. They didn’t defeat me. Okay….sometimes they did. I cried and screamed and I was bitter for spans at a time but I never let it really defeat me. Even though I’m in the fishbowl I can see through the filthy glass a bit more clearly now. Just because you’re not right for one thing doesn’t mean you’re not right for another. Opportunities will come your way but as my dad likes to say if you’re not in the game there’s no way to win. I think that’s his version of the other famous cliche.

You can be criticized for being too old, too ethnic, too American looking, too white, too black, too skinny, too fat or whatever “TOO MUCH or TOO LITTLE” they want to label you.  It’s your own perogative to be persistent and passionate about your dreams. Hollywood or elsewhere. ( If it came easy for you…BRAVO… and you’re annoying.)

And if you’re neither of those you can forget it. Because it takes a hell of a lot of dirty work to get there. I don’t have famous parents, I didn’t sleep with anyone to get a job …ever (true story), I could barely pay my rent many months. BUT HELL FRICKIN YES DUDE> all the days of those tough jobs seating people at restaurants, lugging wardrobe racks, checking coats, slaving over some ungrateful celebrity…..equal up to this moment right now.

I have traveled around the world with this gig and every single person I encountered looked at me and said “you have the dream job”. Literally hundreds of people that I met have said that same exact sentence. I’m living it. I am living the dream…. but it wasn’t a dream to get here. I busted my ass. Like big-time. I worked for free many times over.

SO….what’s my point? I don’t really know, but to be honest in my experience EVEN WHEN YOU REACH the dream…….you’re still a Nervous Nellie. And for me that’s a damn good thing.

Stepping off the soapbox in 3….2…1….

Next blog……how I landed this “dream job”.

CHOOSE YOUR POISON GENTS: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/mens-wingtip-boots

H&M Wingtip Boots. Great with jeans OR slacks. Tucked under or over!

Brown Wingtips with grey jeans….Brown and Grey almost ALWAYS looks good together.

The Grey shirt is a simple long sleeve cotton T. It is quite casual but this is a post for my guys who LIKE really casual. you could go for a V neck wool sweater also or a cardigan, both would be terrific options.

Wingtips with Black Jeans!
You could easily add an awesome leather jacket to this OR a Pin Striped blazer to dress it up!
VINTAGE T shirts….okay Boys—- don’t go too crazy here. NO rips or yellow armpits. Choose NICE ones. NO Florida Spring Break ’86 Booby ones either! I mean it!

The Clash Vintage T shirt under a Rust Colored Button Down shirt. Black Asymetrical zip Up Hoodie. Wing Tips and Grey Levi’s.

The sweatshirt below is an awesome casual option that is dressier than a hoodie. The wooden buttons make it fancy! The collar does as well. This sweatshirt is SUPER versatile. Opt for sweats that are a bit more grown up. They say comfortable MAN rather than sloppy teen.

Red Coca Cola T shirt under a Toggled grey Sweatshirt/Sweater. Black Levi’s and Creatice Rec Sneaks.
Creative Recreation Green/Grey high Tops

Some Tech news for ya?

The White Shirt. Subtle Sexy.

Update: forgot to add this look to the white shirt post! Girls. Night. Out.

my head looks weird.

HOLY FILTER BATMAN!

THE SIMPLE WHITE BUTTON UP.
It is often overlooked.
But never paralleled.
Chic. Effortless. (Affordable)
Yet we all forget her/him.

That was my poem to white shirts. Romantic huh?

I don’t have access to a professional photographer so these are the best its gunna get right now. I get a kick out of the fashion bloggers who have AMAZING pics every day but the same exact outfit on. SHORTS and a top. That’s it. Nothing exciting. Nothing too creative or informative. Just here are my skinny shaven legs and some links to buy stuff. (expensive stuff and in this economy we all need a break)
I prefer to help people wear stuff they own…and/or go and experiment with some new items. Think different. Get excited about wearing something you have never considered before.  Shop with gusto!!!!
Take a SIMPLE WHITE BUTTON UP shirt and dress it up!
Not just for work or walking around after a romp in the sack with a white collar banker….. Lose the pleated khaki pants and lose the crocs. Throw on some heels and a jean you feel sexy in and BOOM> there you have it.
I always like to add a lacey bra underneath that is NOT white. A pop of color or simple black lace really takes it up a notch to sexytown.

Shirt-  Nordstrom Rack. 25 bucks.
Shoes- Aldo
Jeans- Forever 21
Jewelry- my old vintage gold stacked

GREAT OPTIONS and everyone has a Target close by!

DIY Muscle Tee

Love Bites. I have sooooo many random t-shirts that I never wear just wasting space in drawers and closets.
Sound familiar?
Scissor time. Cut them up!!!

NO Big deal if you wreck it- you weren’t wearing it anyway!

Cut it i[… then throw on a chunky necklace (and a padded bra in my case) and BOOM-   Rock n’ Roll tank.

I forgot to take a before photo. Smart Karla. Here are some screen grabs from my brilliant instavideo.
Before. Regular old t-shirt.

1. Cut off the sleeves -just enough so a little bra can peek out.  That means cut an inch or less or more ..below the armpit seam. Cut more if you want more bra to show….common sense. Make sure they are even….OR not and be wild and crazy.  NO rules here.

cutting thingys.

nice face.

Sleeve be gone.
other sleeve.

2. Next, Cut up the neckline.

I usually take my scissors sharp edge and run it along the line of the edge of the collar. Separating the two pieces essentially. Make holes in the collar. Cut it off if you are angry with it. Easy way to get more cleavage showing.

I cut a few slices in the chest. I wanted to show some skin.

Tough to see on the black but I made a few horizontal slices in the material.

3. Make any additional holes where you please. (Front and back)  It’s always fun to have a little unexpected hole party in the rear. (so to speak)

4. Then throw it on and delight in your new/not new item of clothing.

And FINITO!! New/Old shirt.

A statement necklace always looks awesome with these shirts. Throw on a cargo pant or skinny jean with some booties or a heel and you are ALL set.

Love both of these options. One is on sale. One is expensiveo.
Steve Madden. Just love him.

ignore the stack of paperwork on my desk that I am ignoring.

the top hole isn’t as crooked as it looks. Bad selfie angle.

Pajama Game

Get yo Pajama Game on!
Pajama-like pants, not actual pajamas. I’m sick of stuffing myself into skin tight jeans. Over it.
Plus it’s too darn hot anyway. There’s an simple way to be casual yet chic with these easy breezy slacks.
Yes, these  slouchy, baggy, loose fitting pants can be sexy!
How to make them sexy not sleepy….
Wear with a HEEL!!!!!
Add some leather.
Get your slutty on with your top….ex: low cut, see through, long armholes so you can see the bra etc.
This offsets the masculine baggy pant.
I always like to be conscious of the feminine vs. masculine with my outfits.
Leather and lace type of thing. It creates balance for me. TOO much girly can be overkill. Too much masculine and you may as well be celibate.
 Silk Pants  #broadwayandbroome @shopwasteland  / muscle tank #LnA / bag vintage from Playclothes in Burbank/  shoes #pourlavictoire  #stylist #fashion #ootd #ootn #stylista #pajamasrule #notbedtime #sleepnaked
Ignore the ugly feet and admire the gorgeousness of the stilettos.

My favorite vintage purse.
Another silky pajama like pant look…
I personally like to roll the ankles a bit….otherwise I can start to look really short. So short ladies…keep that in mind. Show some ankle. It will help.

Vintage Shopping and Mixing prints (2 blogs for the price of 1)

Like a Lioness on the HUNT for vintage Gems. I absolutely love VINTAGE!  I adore Wasteland. WHY?
Because I can go there with clothes I never wear anymore. Items I just want to be rid of for various reasons (ahem too small….bored of them etc etc) You can sell them and get money towards NEW old stuff! (or get cash)  Many vintage and consignment stores do this; Crossroads is another terrific one. Google to see if there are any in your ‘hood!
In the pic above I am shopping away at Wasteland, Studio City. There are quite a few of them all around Los Angeles. Besides Fox’s in NY its my GO-TO store. I prefer to get original items that no one else has. Below are the little baby gems I scored on this trip…..
Lola Photobomb.
Brown leather rose belt.
Black leather fringe pencil skirt.

She’s claiming the skirt. Sexy beast.
Modern silky pajama pant. Color is a bit off in this pic. Roll up the cuff and wear with a heel and BAM sexytime!
They are more of the purple hue seen below. I will do an # ootd with all new items to show how I wear ’em.

OLD MAN HAT! Love this hat so much. Hawaiian print sash. Hat- 15 bucks,  No makeup= priceless.

What I wore to shop.

Mix Up your Prints!!!!  We all know how much I like to mix my metals….but even I am wary of mixing prints sometimes.  It takes a REALLY good eye to wear mismatched prints. I can’t pull it off very often. All the “looks” you see in the fashion mags with mis-matched prints are like CRAZY intense. Just a little bit of a mix goes a long way.  I experimented today and
I doubled up the leopard. The pleated floor sweeping skirt and leopard shoes are a similar but teensy bit different print. Then the hat has a hawaiian print sash around the top. RISKY Karla! RISKEEYYYY! You never know until you try.

PLay! PLay! PLay!

Throwback Wednesday Night! ‘Advice to the Beckhams’

I am seriously super obnoxious. Hey! Don’t agree….I didn’t write this shit. I just get paid to spew it.

RIP Celebrity Daily
